Warning

The use of alcohols, ethyl (Ethanol) or isopropyl (IPA) is common in the food industry for cleaning surfaces. Because of its ability to cause serious pathologies and blindness, methanol is rarely used.

In order to avoid the excise duty (DRM/ monthly summary declaration) on alcohol according to Art. L 245-9 of the Social Security Code, these alcohols must be unfit for human consumption. They must contain denaturants. Since 2017, the European Regulation 2016/1867 only authorises MEK methyl ethyl ketone as a denaturant, even though it is classified as H 319, EUH 066 (INRS toxicological data sheet 14) associated with Denatonium Benzoate, the structure of which is related to lidocaine. Denatonium Benzoate is mainly used as an animal repellent, but is also used as a bittering agent. 

Any other denaturing process requires the authorisation of the customs service.
